The Lofoten, an archipelago in Arctic Norway, is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Cultivated for thousands of years and a haven for the Vikings since the 5th century. An area with a special history. A landscape with special colours. A source of inspiration for writers and artists over the centuries. Here, the sea and the mountains collide and form extraordinary clouds. And when the sun is low, a special effect is created between the light and the landscape. The steep mountains of the Lofoten give way to beaches with yellow sand and clear water. It is like “Little Switzerland by the sea”.
Nature lovers and photographers will love this trip. Northern Norway is a world full of magic and wonders to explore. Our days in the fjords will feature panoramic landscapes with jagged mountain peaks plunging into sheltered waters. Our exact route will of course be determined by the weather, but will certainly take us past picturesque fishing villages with idyllic harbours, secluded anchorages and pristine landscapes. Along the way, we will have unexpected encounters with wildlife to be proud of. There are few places in the world where the chances of seeing large groups of whales are so high. Of course, we cannot predict sightings, we just accept nature’s gifts as they are given to us.
When night falls and weather conditions are favourable, we turn our gaze to the sky in search of the Northern Lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, this light is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to see it. Without warning, the sky lights up with dancing bands of colour, ranging from the usual green to shades of red and purple. We visit places and ports with little light pollution, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy and photograph the northern lights in all their glory. While no sighting or specific colour of the northern lights can be guaranteed, the chances at this time of year are very high in the places we sail to on the Meander.
On a sailing ship, sailing is an active part of everyday life. We prefer to sail as often as possible and as soon as the weather permits. The Meander is an easy-to-operate sailing ship that offers a lot of fun. Our crew will always invite you to actively participate in sailing. The tranquillity of the fjords, surrounded by majestic mountains, is even better when the Meander glides through the water without engine noise.
Possible ports and anchorages:
We do not have a fixed itinerary with predetermined destinations that are integral to the trip and experience. Instead, planning is flexible, day-by-day, taking into account the group’s interests as well as weather and wind conditions. From years of experience in northern Norway and Svalbard, we know that this approach leads to the best travel experiences and that the weather is more of a guide that leads us to new discoveries than a potential disruptive factor. Here is a selection of places we will visit on this trip. Southern route possible ports: Andfjord , Senja , Andenes , Gryllefjord , Skrolsvik , Sommarøy , Harstad , Nusfjord , Reine and various anchorages.
