Experience the ultimate ocean voyage

Step aboard the impressive tall ship Noorderlicht and experience an unforgettable sailing adventure across the Atlantic Ocean. During this offshore sailing voyage from Madeira to Cape Verde, you will take part in the second leg of a full ocean crossing. This is the perfect journey for adventurous travelers with basic sailing experience who want to experience true life at sea.

Sail from Madeira to Cape Verde

Your adventure begins in Machico, located on the eastern coast of Madeira. This charming town, once the island’s original capital, offers an authentic and sunny start to your journey. Unlike Madeira’s volcanic landscape, Machico features a rare golden sandy beach. Its crystal-clear bay invites you for a refreshing swim, while hikers can enjoy lush scenery, viewpoints, and historical landmarks.

After embarking, you slowly leave Madeira behind. As the archipelago fades on the horizon, it’s time to hoist the sails together with the crew and set a course southward. In the days ahead, everything revolves around the rhythm of the ocean and life on board.

Hands-on sailing experience on the Atlantic Ocean.

This ocean crossing is a non-stop sailing voyage of approximately 1,000 nautical miles to the island of Sal in Cape Verde. During this passage, it is literally all hands on deck. You actively help with:

  • Hoisting and trimming the sails
  • Steering at the helm
  • Learning traditional seamanship

In addition, you work on a classic watch system of 4 hours on / 8 hours off, together with the crew and other guests. This creates an authentic and intensive sailing experience in which teamwork is central.

Discover the paradise of Cape Verde

After days at sea, you reach Cape Verde, a rugged and diverse archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, located about 600 kilometers off the coast of Senegal. This island chain consists of ten islands with an impressive mix of landscapes: from black volcanoes and arid deserts to green plantations of bananas and coffee.

The waters around Cape Verde are a true paradise for sailors and nature lovers alike. During the crossing, you may spot wildlife such as:

  • Humpback whales
  • Flying fish and tuna
  • Sea turtles

Arrival in Sal – relaxation after your adventure

Your final destination is the island of Sal, known for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue sea. Here, after your sailing adventure, you can relax, enjoy fresh seafood, explore local bars, and readjust to life on land.

Frequently asked questions

We still handle bookings personally and therefore do not have an automated booking system. This allows us to offer you the option to reserve individual spots without obligation for a few days. This way, for example, you can arrange your vacation without anyone snatching your spot right under your nose. For this reason, we are unable to keep track of the exact number of available spots on a daily basis. However, we regularly check the availability of our sailing holidays. Therefore, you can generally assume that there are still enough available spots on all trips that are not marked as “fully booked” or “Last Minute.” Call us or use our booking form if you want to know the exact number of available spots.

If you are travelling alone and have not booked a private cabin, you will be accommodated in a shared cabin. The shared cabins are usually assigned based on gender.

Exceptions:

  • On the Belle Amie and the Seatrips yachts, there are sometimes mixed-gender cabins as well.
  • On the Sir Robert, there are no shared cabins. Are you traveling alone? Then you must book a single cabin..

Yes, vegetarians and allergies/intolerances can be catered for on most ships. On some ships, the menu can also be adapted for vegans. However, there is only one menu per day on the programme. Therefore, please let us know during your booking if you have any special dietary requirements.

In principle, all our trips are suitable for both experienced and novice sailors. The professional crew on board will teach you everything you need to know. In some cases (e.g. on Atlantic crossings) initial sailing experience may be an advantage/requirement. In this case, this will be clearly indicated in the cruise description.
