From Reykjavik to the heart of the Arctic wilderness.

Step aboard the expedition schooner Unplugged and discover one of the most remote and breathtaking regions on Earth: East Greenland. During this exclusive Fly & Sail expedition, you will combine the comfort of a stylish expedition yacht with the raw beauty of fjords, glaciers, Inuit settlements, and drifting icebergs. With a maximum of just 12 guests on board, you will experience Greenland in a truly personal and intimate way.

Your journey begins in Reykjavik, where the included flight takes you to the small Greenlandic village of Kulusuk. Upon arrival, a transfer will be waiting to bring you to the yacht. After embarkation, dinner, and a briefing from the captain, your 8-day adventure through the spectacular waters of East Greenland begins.

A unique route through East Greenland.

The program is active and diverse, featuring almost daily shore landings, zodiac cruises among the icebergs, whale watching, fishing opportunities, and impressive hikes along glaciers and fjords. Summer weather is generally pleasant, although guests should be prepared for occasional rain and rapidly changing weather conditions.

The Route of the Greenland Expedition

Kulusuk – gateway to the Arctic

Kulusuk is a small settlement with around 200 inhabitants, surrounded by rugged mountains and vast ice fields. Despite its remote location, the village is home to a church, a health centre, and a small museum offering insight into the life of the Tunumi Inuit – the original inhabitants of East Greenland. This is where your expedition both begins and ends.

Tasiilaq – colourful Inuit culture surrounded by mountains

From Kulusuk, Unplugged sets course for Tasiilaq, the largest settlement in East Greenland. This picturesque town is located within a dramatic fjord landscape, surrounded by steep snow-covered mountains. Along the way, there is a good chance of spotting humpback whales, sperm whales, and immense drifting icebergs.

In Tasiilaq, you will discover the rich Inuit culture at the local museum, stroll through colourful streets, and meet the local people who still rely on hunting and fishing for their livelihood. A truly authentic introduction to life in Greenland.

Sermilik Fjord – among gigantic icebergs

The famous Sermilik Fjord is one of the most spectacular fjords in Greenland. Here, gigantic icebergs the size of entire city blocks slowly drift from the surrounding glaciers towards the sea. The Helheim, Midgard, and Is glaciers continuously feed this breathtaking icy landscape with newly calved ice.

Depending on the ice conditions, Unplugged will sail deep into the fjord. Along the way, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramas, views of the Greenland Ice Sheet, and perhaps even whales surfacing among the drifting icebergs.

Tiilerilaaq – an authentic Inuit village by the ice

On the shores of Sermilik Fjord lies the charming village of Tiilerilaaq. Here, time seems to stand still. From the coastline, you can admire a magical landscape of gigantic drifting icebergs in extraordinary shapes and colours.

You can stroll through the village and taste local specialities such as smoked trout and cod prepared by Inuit fishermen. If conditions allow, we will make a zodiac excursion among the enormous ice formations — an unforgettable experience.

Bluie East Two & Ammassalik Fjord

Deep within the Greenlandic wilderness lies Bluie East Two, an abandoned American air force base dating back to the Second World War. The historic area around Ikkateq is scattered with lakes and rugged landscapes, perfect for hiking and photography.

If weather conditions are favourable, we continue sailing towards the famous Ammassalik Fjord, where whales are frequently spotted.

Sermiliqaaq – where glaciers come to life

The impressive region of Sermiliqaaq, literally meaning “The Beautiful Glacier Fjord,” is one of the highlights of the journey. Here, two gigantic glaciers meet: the Karale Glacier and the Knud Rasmussen Glacier.

During a walk along the fjord, you may witness the spectacular calving of massive ice formations — a dramatic natural phenomenon where enormous blocks of ice crash into the sea with thunderous force.

Sailing Yacht Unplugged – intimate luxury in the polar regions.

Your home during this expedition is the classic sailing yacht Unplugged, built in Italy by the renowned Cantiere Valdettaro shipyard. The vessel combines timeless elegance with modern comfort and is perfectly suited for expeditions to remote regions such as Greenland and Antarctica.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

Sailing among gigantic icebergs, discovering Inuit culture, and spending your nights surrounded by Greenland’s raw natural beauty make this an unforgettable experience for adventurous travellers and nature lovers alike.

Good to know

The fjords of East Greenland are often exceptionally calm and serene during summer. This expedition is therefore less focused on active sailing or intensive sailing practice, and instead centres on nature, exploration, and comfort in one of the world’s most spectacular polar regions.

As with all polar expeditions, fog, wind, and weather conditions play an important role. We therefore strongly recommend booking flexible flight tickets to and from Reykjavik.

Frequently asked questions

We still handle bookings personally and therefore do not have an automated booking system. This allows us to offer you the option to reserve individual spots without obligation for a few days. This way, for example, you can arrange your vacation without anyone snatching your spot right under your nose. For this reason, we are unable to keep track of the exact number of available spots on a daily basis. However, we regularly check the availability of our sailing holidays. Therefore, you can generally assume that there are still enough available spots on all trips that are not marked as “fully booked” or “Last Minute.” Call us or use our booking form if you want to know the exact number of available spots.

If you are travelling alone and have not booked a private cabin, you will be accommodated in a shared cabin. The shared cabins are usually assigned based on gender.

Exceptions:

  • On the Belle Amie and the Seatrips yachts, there are sometimes mixed-gender cabins as well.
  • On the Sir Robert, there are no shared cabins. Are you traveling alone? Then you must book a single cabin..

Yes, vegetarians and allergies/intolerances can be catered for on most ships. On some ships, the menu can also be adapted for vegans. However, there is only one menu per day on the programme. Therefore, please let us know during your booking if you have any special dietary requirements.

In principle, all our trips are suitable for both experienced and novice sailors. The professional crew on board will teach you everything you need to know. In some cases (e.g. on Atlantic crossings) initial sailing experience may be an advantage/requirement. In this case, this will be clearly indicated in the cruise description.
