Mediterranean sailing adventure
Step aboard the traditional tall ship Florette and sail across the Mediterranean from Malta to Italy. In her home port of Sliema, you’ll be picked up by tender and welcomed aboard this classic wooden brigantine. Here begins an active and authentic sailing adventure, where you’ll raise the sails and set course for Italy alongside the experienced crew.
This is a hands-on sailing voyage: you’ll learn from a crew who have lived and sailed aboard Florette for over twenty years. The trip is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking the thrill of longer passages on the open sea, combined with exploring the coasts of Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia over eight days.
From Malta to the open sea
Florette is anchored in Sliema Creek, between the lively town of Sliema and historic Valletta. The next morning, you depart early, sailing past Valletta’s impressive sandstone city walls, out of the harbor, and into Malta’s coastal waters. Along the way, you help set and trim the sails, learn knot-tying, and keep a lookout for other vessels and marine life.
Passage and watchkeeping
During this voyage, Florette sails on a three-watch system, with sailing both day and night. Together, you’ll cover approximately 650 nautical miles. As a guest, you become a true part of the crew: in addition to standing watch, you’re also expected to help with small domestic tasks around meals to keep the ship running smoothly.
Sicily and the Mediterranean Sea
The first long passage takes you from Malta toward Sicily. The exact route depends on wind, weather, and tides, with the captain deciding where and when to stop. As this is a true offshore crossing, the focus is on sailing, with limited time ashore—perfect for those seeking the open-sea experience.
Along the west coast of Sicily, Florette can anchor, allowing you to explore the unique cultural blend of this part of the island. North African, Greek, Arab, and Roman influences come together here in both architecture and cuisine. You’ll sail past rugged coastlines, hidden bays, and picturesque villages before setting course for Sardinia. During this longer passage, you’ll experience the magical feeling of night sailing under a sparkling starry sky, surrounded by nothing but the sea and the gentle lapping of water against the wooden hull.
Arrival in Sardinia
With Sardinia in sight, a beautiful coastal sail follows along the island’s unspoiled east coast, featuring Mediterranean vegetation, impressive mountains, secluded coves, and idyllic beaches. The voyage ends in the port of Olbia in the northeast. After disembarkation, the historic center and charming promenade are well worth exploring as you gradually find your sea legs again.
