From Portimão on the southern coast of Portugal, the tall ship Blue Clipper sails across the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Island of Tenerife. The journey across the open ocean takes 10 days including extra buffer days to make the most of the wind. Arriving early on Tenerife, you can use the ship as a base to regain your footing and explore the area.

This adventurous ocean sailing holiday is sure to leave lifelong memories. During this sailing adventure we use the trade winds across the equator to fill the sails and cover of hundreds of kilometres. It is not for cowards, but perfect for the enthusiastic adventurer! We recommend having some experience on the water and having spent some time on a boat – once we leave port, there is no turning back!

An ocean adventure offers the full spectrum of elements. From rough seas and gentle breezes to trade winds that fill the sails and propel you over the waves. The professional crew masters manoeuvres in wind, rain and sun and uses weather radar technology to determine the safest and most efficient route. Each day brings new surprises and enables guests to develop resilience, adaptability and a deep appreciation for nature and its elements. The gentle, rhythmic swell of the ship, the endless sea and the quiet creak of the rigging are the perfect ingredients for an adventurous holiday experience.

The professional and experienced crew will teach you everything you need to know, because on this trip you will be part of the crew. You will hoist the sails, stand at the helm and be involved in all aspects of sailing on a tall ship. The Blue Clipper sails day and night. Far away from land, in the middle of the open ocean, you can see the night sky like never before. With no light pollution from the inhabited world, the stars shine brightly and create breathtaking views.

Everyone is invited to participate in the watch system on board, but this is not compulsory – the ship is fully crewed. Don’t worry, you will never be without a crew member on watch and the watch system is worked out once everyone is on board to assess the guests’ skills.

From plotting the route on the chart, cooking together, navigating astronomically, hoisting and trimming sails to rope work and repairs – there is always something to do on watch. The rest of the time is free to enjoy the deep black night sky, read a book or three or play cards together. The sea gives you a chance to throw off the demands of the modern world and fill your soul with “Vitamin sea”.

Tip: You can reach Portimao via ‘Faro’ airport. There are direct flights from London. There are also direct flights from Tenerife South to London. From Santa Cruz, a bus takes about 1 hour to the airport. You can also fly back to the UK from Tenerife North via Madrid or Barcelona. If you need help with your travel planning, please contact us.

Frequently asked questions

We still handle your bookings personally and therefore do not have an automatic booking system. This way, we can enable you to reserve individual places for a few days without any obligation. This allows you, for example, to arrange your holiday without someone stealing your place from under your nose. For this reason, we cannot keep track of the exact number of free places on a daily basis. However, we regularly check the availability of our sailing holidays. Therefore, you can generally assume that plenty of free places are still available on all trips that are not marked as ‘fully booked’ or ‘Last Minute’. Call us or use our booking form if you want to know the exact number of places available.

If you are travelling alone and have not booked a private cabin, you will be accommodated in a shared cabin. Shared cabins are normally divided by gender. Only on the Belle Amie and Seatrips Yachts do they sometimes have mixed cabins.

Yes, vegetarians and allergies/intolerances can be catered for on most ships. However, there is only one menu per day on the programme. Therefore, please let us know during your booking if you have any special dietary requirements.

In principle, all our trips are suitable for both experienced and novice sailors. The professional crew on board will teach you everything you need to know. In some cases (e.g. on Atlantic crossings) initial sailing experience may be an advantage/requirement. In this case, this will be clearly indicated in the cruise description.
