Hamburg’s port is celebrating its 836th birthday. When the port and Hanseatic city invites for this popular birthday celebration, the ‘birthday guests’ gather: a motley collection of traditional ships, most of which come from distant lands especially for this event. They usher in the celebration with an impressive and ever-fascinating entry parade.
Enjoy the lively and festive bustle ashore, at the famous Landungsbrücken, and admire Hamburg’s most famous and beautiful sights from the water. Thousands of people attend, but few get the chance to take part in this beloved ‘parade of ships’.
Don’t miss this highlight! Step aboard and experience the port of Hamburg up close during the opening ceremony aboard a traditional sailing ship. Traditionally, the mayor of Hamburg opens the port’s anniversary on board the Rickmer Rickmers and gives the starting signal for the entry parade. Depending on the wind and weather, we will enter the port of Hamburg together with all the other ships with as much sail as possible.
