The northwest coast of Spain is an unknown area for many, which has helped prevent mass tourism. As a result, the region has retained its authenticity. In terms of nature, it resembles the Scottish “Outer Hebrides,” but the temperature here is much more pleasant. Unlike southern Spain, it remains cool and not unbearably hot.
From the vibrant Vigo, we explore the many inlets, known as Rias, such as the Ria de Pontevedra and the Ria de Arosa. These southern Rias, the Rias Baixas, are famous for their pleasant weather and ideal sailing conditions, and are well protected from ocean swells.
We visit charming harbors with picturesque old town centers and houses in typical Galician style, featuring bay windows and grain barns on stilts, such as in Combarro and Baiona. In Baiona, we can explore the town in the evening and enjoy its vibrant nightlife.
Of course, we also anchor at the beautiful Islas Cies, a nature reserve where we take a stunning hike with breathtaking views over the islands and the ocean. For those interested, there is also the opportunity to swim. The journey ends in the lively Vigo, where we conclude the trip with a delicious meal.
The daily distances vary, depending on the weather and tides, between 10 and 29 miles. The above itinerary is subject to weather, wind, and tide conditions and may be adjusted if necessary.
