A unique mini-ocean crossing for adventurous sailors
At the end of winter, we make a special crossing: from subtropical Madeira to the lush Azores. A unique sailing experience of about 700 nautical miles – perfect for those looking to gain ocean sailing experience or log miles.
We start on the beautiful island of Madeira. On the first day, we stay sheltered along the coast, sailing westward. This allows everyone to get comfortable with the boat, the ocean, and life on board. In the afternoon, we prepare for the main adventure: the crossing to the Azores.
Around 4–5 days of non-stop sailing
The distance between Madeira and the Azores is roughly 500 nautical miles “as the crow flies,” but depending on wind direction and strength, we sail to the eastern part of the archipelago in 4 to 5 days. During the crossing, we sail on a 3-watch system (3 hours on, 6 hours off), ensuring everyone gets enough rest and can start their watch alert and ready – manageable even during cooler nights.
Along the way, we enjoy the deep blue swells of the ocean, spectacular sunsets, a breathtaking starry sky, and – with a bit of luck – dolphins and whales.
Island hopping in the Azores
If the wind is favorable, we’ll have some time after the crossing to visit one or two islands. Think of Santa Maria, the southernmost island, or the stunning São Miguel with its crater lakes, natural hot springs, and lush mountainous landscapes.
The journey ends in Praia da Vitória on the island of Terceira. For this, we make one final overnight sail from São Miguel, covering about 100 miles. The last evening is a relaxed finish with a shared dinner at a local restaurant.
A short ocean crossing – perfect for those who truly want to sail.
Daily distances vary between 20 and 550 miles, depending on weather and tides. The above schedule is subject to weather, wind, and tidal conditions and may be adjusted if necessary.
Category A/C: Crossing – this is a true ocean sailing mileage builder from one port to another. Night sailing on a watch system will also take place. Before and after the crossing, there is time for shorter day sails and exploration ashore.
