An unforgettable ocean adventure
An ocean sailing adventure is sure to leave lifelong memories. During this sailing adventure, we take advantage of the trade winds across the equator to fill the sails and cover thousands of kilometers. It is not for cowards, but perfect for the enthusiastic adventurer!
Sailing from Portugal, via Tenerife, to the Caribbean
From Portimão on the southern coast of Portugal, the tall ship Blue Clipper sails across the Atlantic to the Caribbean island of Barbados. The journey takes 40 days to cross the open ocean, including a four-day stop in Tenerife and extra buffer days to make the most of the wind Arriving early on Tenerife, you can use the ship as a base to regain your footing and explore the area.
The power of the elements
An ocean adventure offers the full spectrum of elements. From rough seas and gentle breezes to trade winds that fill the sails and propel you over the waves. Prepare for powerful winds and towering waves—perfect for sailing—but also for glassy, windless seas… and everything in between. The professional crew masters manoeuvres in wind, rain and sun and uses weather radar technology to determine the safest and most efficient route. Each day brings new surprises and enables guests to develop resilience, adaptability and a deep appreciation for nature and its elements.
Previous experience on the water is highly recommended. Once the ship is underway, there is no turning back. It is therefore advisable to have completed at least a shorter offshore sailing trip beforehand to test your seafaring skills. This could be, for example, a week’s trip in the Caribbean, or a weekend on the Baltic or in the Mediterranean. We will be happy to recommend a suitable “test trip”.
Join the crew and be part of the adventure
The professional and experienced crew will teach you everything you need to know, because on this trip you will be part of the crew. You will hoist the sails, stand at the helm and be involved in all aspects of sailing on a tall ship. The Blue Clipper sails day and night. Everyone is invited to participate in the watch system on board, but this is not compulsory – the ship is fully crewed. Don’t worry, you will never be without a crew member on watch and the watch system is worked out once everyone is on board to assess the guests’ skills.
Living and learning at sea
From plotting the route on the chart, cooking together, navigating astronomically, hoisting and trimming sails to rope work and repairs – there is always something to do on watch. The rest of the time is free to enjoy the deep black night sky, read a book or three or play cards together. The sea gives you a chance to throw off the demands of the modern world and fill your soul with “Vitamin sea”.
Why go on this trip?
An ocean sailing crossing gives you the unique chance to fully immerse yourself in the sea, the elements, and life on board for days on end, far from the hectic pace of everyday life. The voyage blends excitement, adventure, and a profound connection with your fellow travelers and the natural world, creating unforgettable memories and new perspectives on yourself and the world.
