After participating in the climate conference in Belém, the Tall Ship Morgenster will begin her transatlantic return voyage to Den Helder on November 23, 2025. Anchored in the river near the city, the ship is fully stocked and ready to set sail.
The crossing is expected to take approximately five weeks, with arrival in Den Helder around December 28, 2025. Please note that the exact arrival time depends on the weather conditions at sea — ultimately, Mother Nature sets the pace.
Arrival & Welcome Aboard
When you step aboard the Morgenster, memories of past adventures or dreams of new discoveries immediately come to life. The familiar scent of the sea mingles with the promise of what lies ahead.
After you arrive on board, the crew gives you a warm welcome and guides you to your cozy cabin. With a welcome drink in hand, you’ll meet your fellow travelers and the crew. The captain will explain the voyage route and go over the safety instructions. During a tour, you’ll get to know the ship, the safety equipment, and everything you need to quickly feel at home on board.
Active Sailing – Learn, Experience, Enjoy
On board the Morgenster, you’re not a passenger — you’re part of the crew. You’ll be involved in all aspects of seafaring life: hoisting sails, steering, navigating, and recording the ship’s position every hour. The experienced crew will teach you the art of traditional sailing step by step.
Up for a challenge? Climb the rigging! Of course, you’ll receive full instruction along with a harness and safety line. At the top of the mast, with the wind in your hair and the ocean below you, you’ll experience an unforgettable moment.
The watch schedule creates rhythm and teamwork on board:
- Red Watch: 08:00 AM – 12:00 PM / 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM
- White Watch: 12:00–16:00 / 00:00–04:00
- Blue Watch: 16:00–20:00 / 04:00–08:00
The camaraderie within your watch makes life at sea intense and rewarding.
The Route – Trade Winds, Azores & North Sea
After departing from Belém, we sail non-stop to the Azores. The first leg follows the Brazilian coastline, carried by the warm current toward the Caribbean. The climate remains pleasant, ideal for nighttime star watches and spotting flying fish, chased by mahi-mahi and frigatebirds—a true natural spectacle.
Around the latitude of Bermuda, the westerly winds take over. These bring the unpredictable weather of the North Atlantic, with shifting wind directions between northwest and southwest. The sails are often adjusted, reefed, and set full again. On downwind courses, the ship reaches its full glory: square-rigged, freely sailing under full sail.
A winter Atlantic crossing is adventurous, physically demanding, and requires good health. Far from the coast, medical facilities are limited.
Stopover in the Azores & Final Leg to Den Helder
We make a brief stop in Horta, on the island of Faial, to restock supplies, stretch our legs, and—who knows—leave a small artwork on the famous sailors’ wall. Afterwards, we set a northeast course, back in the westerlies, toward the English Channel.
If conditions are favorable, we may make a short recreational stop, for example on one of the Channel Islands. But in the Channel, a different world awaits: busy shipping lanes and narrow passages demand sharp seamanship. Here, everything you’ve learned comes together.
North Sea & Final Destination Den Helder
On the North Sea, we pass wind farms and traffic separation schemes on our way to Den Helder, the home port of the Morgenster and the “capital of the North Sea.” By then, you will have crossed an ocean, learned the ropes, gazed at the stars from the deck, and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Meals on Board – More Than Just Food
Each day, the ship’s bell signals the start of a communal meal. Our ship’s cook prepares three tasty, nutritious meals a day, with an additional snack at 4:00 PM. During the night watches, warm toasties are served—simple yet comforting treats that enhance the atmosphere.
At each stop ashore, a supply of fresh vegetables and fruit is taken on board. The freezers are stocked with quality meat, and who knows—we might even catch a fish along the way.
On board, food is more than nourishment—it’s a way to connect. Around the table, stories are shared, friendships are formed, and you feel part of something special.
