What is there to do on board a sailing ship?
- Experiencing the sailor’s life
- Hoisting and lowering sails together and performing sailing manoeuvres
- Taking the helm yourself and learning to use sea charts
- Learning sailing theory through the crew’s explanations and ‘learning by doing’
- Observing weather phenomena (thunderstorms, sunsets at sea, etc.)
- Learning to tie sailor’s knots
- Climbing the mast (not possible on all ships!)
- Lying in the jib net (also while sailing)
- Joining anker and night watches
- Performing traditional seaman’s chores, such as scrubbing the deck or polishing copper
