Bringing a valid passport or ID card is mandatory (also for children!).
Are you living outside the EU or does your trip take place outside Europe? Then check before departure what the entry requirements are for the relevant country.
A provisional passport (if the re-applied pass does not arrive on time) is also allowed. Remember that the passport or ID card must still be valid for at least 3 months at the time of travel.
