Sailing Holiday Mediterranean

Sailing on a traditional sailing ship in the Mediterranean is an experience that appeals to both the heart and the senses. From breathtaking volcanoes and Greek islands to the rugged coastlines of Italy, a sailing holiday in the Mediterranean offers a variety of destinations, each with its unique charm and unparalleled beauty.

Sunshine in the Mediterranean

Of course, no drawing of shunshine is needed here. With at least 300 sunny days per year, the eastern Mediterranean area is especially a dream destination for sun worshippers. It is particularly ideal for “fair-weather sailors,” where you can truly enjoy the sun, sea, and sailing ship at their finest. At any moment of the day, you can jump off the ship into the sea without worrying about getting cold.

No Tides, Little Current

No complicated tidal charts, depth calculations, or intensive trip planning. The Mediterranean itself is isolated enough to be minimally affected by the tidal waves that the Atlantic Ocean develops, and it is too small to create any significant tidal waves. This means there is no noteworthy current, so we are spared from complicated calculations to determine our course or other navigational adjustments. However, there may be fluctuations in water depth due to wind influence, but with the local knowledge of a well-trained crew aboard our traditional sailing ships (read more about the Dutch traditional sailing fleet here), this is easily managed, ensuring a safe journey. An ideal sailing area for relaxing trips where you don’t have to calculate and plan too much.

A Rugged Coastline

Bay after bay after bay. An endless series of the most idyllic anchor spots. Secluded beaches or those with restaurants, moored to a buoy or anchored ourselves, swinging freely or tied securely to shore… variations on a theme, but all equally fun or exciting. A perfect opportunity to relax, read a good book on deck under the shadow of a volcano, or take a swim around the ship.

Clear Water

Visual navigation. This remains one of the most important navigation tools when sailing in the Mediterranean, in addition to our digital charts. A crew member stands at the bow of the ship when things get a little tricky on the map, and the azure blue, transparent water allows us to safely enter bays and harbors using both sight and our depth meter. Not only great to look at but also handy for navigation.

Summary

A Sailing Holiday Mediterranean is a captivating mix of deep blue water, rich history, and diverse cultures – a true paradise for sailors. Boarding one of our affiliated traditional sailing ships on this ancient sea is not only a journey through picturesque landscapes but also an exploration of some of the most historically and culturally rich regions in the world.
