Ocean Sherpa

The Ocean Sherpa was built in 1941 in Wolgast, Germany, as a KFK cutter (‘war cutter’). After the end of the war, the ship was brought to the Netherlands and converted from wood to steel in 1957 to sail the North Sea as a fishing vessel. Arriving in the twenty-first century, the Ocean Sherpa’s “ship’s life” would again change dramatically. The ship was converted into a topsail schooner with the character of a yacht and used for sailing trips on the Baltic Sea under the name “Avatar”. Since 2024, the Ocean Sherpa’s sailing area has changed again, and the ship now sails as an expedition ship around Svalbard.

The fast-sailing and comfortable ship is your floating base camp during your expedition and, with its traditional rigging, is reminiscent of the first explorations of the Arctic. Traditional rigging in a modern design and the sharp underwater hull make this top sail schooner a fast, seaworthy sailing vessel. The easy handling of the sails allows even people without sailing experience to actively participate. Besides the longitudinal rigged sails, Ocean Sherpa has three square rigged sails, allowing her to sail in traditional style, just like the explorers of the past.

The steel reinforced hull and top stability make her a safe ship in all weather conditions and ready for ice operations. Ocean Sherpa is certified and maintained to the highest safety standards: She is classified under SOLAS and operates voluntarily under ISM and PWOM. The ship is equipped with Inmarsat and Iridium.
