Kaat Mossel

The clipper Kaat Mossel was launched as a two-master in 1905 at the shipyard of the de Boer brothers in Lemmer. The ship was built to sail the stormy Zuiderzee without any problems. Until 1930, the Kaat Mossel was used as a sailing freighter to transport various goods. In the subsequent period until 1972, the masts were removed and the ship was used as a motor freighter.

Today, the Kaat Mossel is again equipped with two masts and 20 berths and you can book the ship for a sailing trip in the Netherlands. Come on board and take a trip back in time.

The sailing area includes the Markermeer and IJsselmeer with its picturesque towns like Enkhuizen, Medemblik and Makkum. The Wadden Islands are also popular, as are the inland waters of Friesland and Overijssel. A trip via Amsterdam, Zaandam and Alkmaar to Den Helder is also a possibility. On the other hand, a round trip to Groningen via the Lauwersmeer is also recommended. Of course, the wind and tides determine which route is possible. In short: holidays, study trips, club outings, on board the Kaat Mossel much is possible.

Below deck is a comfortable and cosy saloon with a well-equipped kitchen. As the saloon is on different levels, you have great views of the sea or harbour from the breakfast table all around. The cabins each have a roof hatch, allowing plenty of daylight to enter. In addition, the Kaat Mossel has 3 toilets and 2 showers.

With her large foredeck and spacious middle deck, there is always a place where you can linger. Or maybe you prefer to stay on the wide aft deck, where the skipper will be happy to explain everything about the ship and sailing. Sometimes there is also the opportunity to take the helm yourself and experience what it is like to steer such a large ship.

A wonderful and eventful week aboard the Kaat Mossel

17 June 2026

Our trip took place at the end of July 2025 and lasted five days. From the very first moment, we felt welcome and comfortable on board. The possibility of arriving the evening before the sailing trip began and spending the night on board made things very convenient and allowed us to travel there in a relaxed way. From the first day, the captain made sure that everyone settled in well and felt at home. The dog on board was a particularly lovely experience for the children. We were always well informed about what to expect next. The cabins were simple, clean, and well maintained, as were the deck and the shared areas. Two enthusiastic private chefs made sure we were always well looked after when it came to food. Drinks were also available at all times.I would have liked to learn a little more about the ship and sailing in general, for example through a short introductory session about sailing. It was possible to get this information by asking directly, but you had to take the initiative yourself. The language barrier may also have made this a little more difficult, as the deckhand unfortunately spoke very little German.Nevertheless, everyone received an introduction to some of the basic tasks on board at the beginning. These were needed when leaving the harbour in the morning, entering the harbour in the evening, and, when necessary, during the voyage. Everyone was involved. We worked as a team, and the children in particular were deliberately divided into groups and given tasks that challenged them without overwhelming or underchallenging them.We were lucky and experienced all kinds of weather, from sunshine to strong winds and rain. In between, there was still plenty of time to relax, play games, chat, make music, do nothing at all, and go for walks or explore ashore after mooring.A lovely surprise was the cosy farewell celebration, with a small dinner, a decorated cabin, and an evening programme put together by all the guests. All in all, it was a wonderful sailing holiday. It was the first time for my children and me, and we were not disappointed. We would definitely do it again. The Kaat Mossel is absolutely recommended.
