How safe is a sailing ship?

All ships of Rederij van Linschoten are officially inspected and certified by the shipping inspection. They comply with the legal requirements for rescue and safety equipment. The ships are regularly inspected by the Dutch Shipping Inspection (SI) or a foreign inspection authority, such as the German BG-Verkehr. The crew is trained according to international standards (STCW) and regularly undergoes safety training.

The ships are equipped with the legally required rescue and safety equipment. The standard equipment includes, among other things:

  • Life jackets for all passengers
  • Life rafts
  • First aid kit
  • VHF radio

In addition, during the annual inspection, the pumping systems, gas, electricity, and engine room installations, the fire and smoke alarms, and the fire-fighting equipment are thoroughly checked.

For sea-going ships, additional safety requirements apply. The ships of Rederij van Linschoten that sail outside the Netherlands also have the required ISM certificates.
